McLean, VA

McLean is a desirable and sought-after enclave located roughly 20 minutes from Washington DC. Along with Great Falls, McLean is widely recognized as one of the most luxurious communities among DC suburbs as well as the whole state of Virginia.

Residents of McLean include Washingtonian movers and shakers such as high-level diplomats and government officials. They join their more low-profile neighbors in making this elegant yet family-friendly community their permanent home – especially as it remains conveniently close to Washington DC.

McLean lies along the banks of Potomac River and is a part of Fairfax County. The community encompasses approximately 25 square miles. Within the district are stately residences, green spaces, commercial establishments, upscale shopping destinations, and cultural attractions. McLean is also notable for being the home of the Central Intelligence Agency and several large companies.

A number of major highways serve McLean, including the Capital Beltway, I-66, Old Dominion Drive, and the George Washington Memorial Parkway.  The Washington Metro Silver Line’s McLean Station, located near the upmarket shopping center Tysons Corner, also connects McLean to Washington DC.

Educational opportunities are part of McLean’s family-friendly appeal. The district is served by Fairfax County Public Schools. The community is also home to private schools, while universities such as George Mason University are just a short distance away.

Community History

McLean was officially founded in 1910 but there were settlers in the area as far back as the 1600s. This census-designated place (CDP) was formed when the hamlets of Langley and Lewinsville merged. The district was named after John McLean, a former owner and publisher of The Washington Post.
