A brief history of Bethesda

In the early 1800s, the town acted as a rural way station after the Washington and Rockville Turnpike, a route for transporting tobacco and other goods between Rockville and Georgetown, was established. In 1862, the community was called “Darcy’s Store” after William Darcy, who owned a local establishment in the area. It was later renamed Bethesda in honor of the Bethesda Meeting House, a local church built in 1820. The church served the community until 1925, when a new church on Wilson Lane was built to replace it.

Today, Bethesda is a vibrant urban center that’s home to more than 60,000 residents. It is one of the most desirable communities in the Washington, DC area, giving residents an ideal balance between city living and easy access to the suburbs. It has plenty to offer as well – even residents of downtown DC flock to Bethesda to enjoy its top-notch selection of shopping, dining, and entertainment venues.

Arts enthusiasts will be interested to know that the town’s downtown area has been designated by the state of Maryland as an Arts & Entertainment District. Here, you’ll be able to find inspiring art venues, gorgeous public art pieces, performance theaters, cinemas showcasing independent films, and so much more.
