Living in Petworth, DC

On the northwestern/north-central side of Washington D.C. lies welcoming, close-knit Petworth. This community is named after an estate that once extended across this area before becoming part of DC in the late 1800s. It is adjacent to two notable historic places – the Rock Creek Church Yard and Cemetery, which dates back to the 18th century, and the Armed Forces Retirement Home (formerly the Soldiers’ Home), on whose grounds you’ll find President Lincoln’s Cottage.

Petworth is easily accessible on the Washington Metro and is served by its own station, the Georgia Avenue-Petworth station, which is on both the Green Line and the Yellow Line. From here, residents of Petworth can easily commute to Downtown DC, which is just around 20 minutes away.

In the last decade, Petworth has transformed into one of the District’s most sought-after neighborhoods. Home buyers are drawn by its convenient location, strong sense of community, relatively affordable and varied housing stock, and a burgeoning commercial district filled mostly with independently owned establishments.

Petworth Community Life

Petworth has an ever-growing number of community events and activities, one of which is a popular farmer’s market every weekend. The Petworth Community Market, which is held on Saturday mornings from May to November, sells a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and dairy products, prepared foods, and handmade wares. This is a great place to pick up lunch, supplement your weekly grocery list, and meet the neighbors.

During the summer, Petworth hosts a series of free jazz concerts. These shows, each of which is under the umbrella of the Petworth Jazz Project, are held at Petworth Park. Another popular cultural event is Celebrate Petworth. This street festival is held each summer and attracts guests from all over the region. In December, there’s the Upshur Street Handmade Art & Craft Fair.

Petworth’s commercial areas are concentrated mainly on Georgia Avenue near the Metro station and along a lively block on Upshur Street. Due to the neighborhood’s increasing popularity, shopping and dining options are getting more and more plentiful and residents don’t have to go far for anything, whether they want to pick up groceries, new books for their kids, vintage furniture, or a cup of coffee.

Petworth Real Estate Options

The real estate market in Petworth is characterized by the rows of brick houses that edge its tree-lined streets. Many of these properties date back to the 1920s and 30s when much of the neighborhood was developed by the prolific Harry Wardman. These rowhouses are well preserved, and many of the properties have been updated with more modern interiors. These homes typically have a small lawn, most of which feature well-manicured shrubs or other landscaping, and covered front porches.

Petworth also has a significant number of single-family homes and townhouses in the array of architectural styles popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. You will typically find older homes in the Grant Circle area.

Home values in this neighborhood have been appreciating at a slightly faster rate than some of its neighboring communities, so if you are interested in purchasing real estate in Petworth, now is the time to make your move.
