Living in Logan Circle, Shaw, and U Street

Historic Logan Circle lies between Dupont Circle and Shaw, and is centered on the Logan Circle traffic circle (from which it gets its name). This traffic circle and the gardens within it are maintained by the National Park Service. Covering an area of just over 100,000 square feet, this well-lit park features an equestrian statue of Civil War general John Logan and includes several wooden benches, an iron fence, and ornamental lampposts.

Near Logan Circle is Shaw, one of DC’s most vibrant residential and commercial districts, whose main commercial center lies on the U Street Corridor. This community has a Washington Metro stop on the Green Line making it easy for its residents to access neighboring communities as well as Downtown Washington D.C.

Logan Circle2

Logan Circle is a dynamic mix of residential and commercial areas and includes two districts that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its commercial district is centered on 14th Street, where you’ll find an array of shops, restaurants, and bars.

Neighborhood residents also enjoy being close to all the action of nearby Shaw and its lively U Street Corridor. The birthplace of jazz legend Duke Ellington, Shaw has been seeing plenty of revitalization over the last several decades, transforming into a true live/play community. U Street, its main drag, is alive with shops and restaurants, nightclubs, art galleries, and music and entertainment venues like the historic Lincoln Theatre and Howard Theatre.

DC Real Estate Options

Real estate in Logan Circle is predominantly composed of Victorian-era residences, many of which remain unchanged since their construction in the late 1800s. The Logan Circle Historic District includes 135 homes built in the Richardson Romanesque or Late Victorian architectural styles.

Logan Circle’s other, larger historic district is the Fourteenth Street Historic District. Included in the National Register listing are 735 properties, among which are two twin apartment buildings, the Gladstone and the Hawarden. These historic buildings were the first of their kind in the area.

Shaw’s housing stock is composed mostly of late Victorian and early 20th century rowhouses. Many of these have undergone significant revitalization in recent years and there are quite a few new and ongoing redevelopment projects in the area. The recent additions of hip new shops, restaurants, and bars have only served to increase the neighborhood’s popularity.

The residential sections of U Street are also filled with turn-of-the-century rowhouses. These multi-story properties are easy to maintain, but if you are looking for something smaller, newer developments of luxury apartments and condos have been built in the last 20 years.
