Living in Potomac MD

Named for the nearby Potomac River, the city of Potomac, MD started out as a small farming community in the early 1700s. Its laid-back quality of life continued on throughout the 1800s, but this all changed in the 1950s when rapid sub-urbanization occurred in many of the communities surrounding Washington, D.C.

Today, Potomac is one of the most affluent communities in the country. It is home to nearly 50,000 residents, many of which are families with young children. If you can afford to live in this exclusive area, Potomac is a great place to raise a family.

Like much of the Mid-Atlantic region, Potomac, MD has a humid subtropical climate, meaning that it has hot, humid summers and cool, mild winters. Residents of this area will enjoy all 4 seasons, something that is attractive to people who are relocating from much farther north or south.

Potomac Recreation Spots

Potomac has a wide range of activities to offer its residents. Everything from hiking and shopping to dining out and visiting historic sites will be at your fingertips if you are living here.

The Billy Goat Trail is a challenging hiking trail that takes about 4.5 hours to complete, but it is well worth the trip. The trail winds across streams and over rocky crags and offers panoramic views of the tree filled valleys below. This is a great place to enjoy the fall foliage with the family. The trail includes three shorter sections that vary in difficulty, so everyone from moderate to serious hikers will have a challenge waiting for them.

The nearby Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center is filled with history exhibits, short films, and other displays and presentations. It includes a gift shop with souvenirs and other trinkets. Here, you can learn more about the park and nearby waterfalls before embarking on your hiking adventure. This is a great place for hiking or biking and is a perfect escape from the nearby metropolitan area. The park even offers a canal boat tour if you are looking to get outdoors without the physical exertion of hiking or biking.

Another popular outdoors spot is the Falls Road Golf Course. It’s a relatively short course, with a fairly open front 9 holes and a more shaded back 9. The staff is friendly and helpful, offering lessons and quick tips to all players. This public course also has a particularly good restaurant that is an awesome place to grab a sandwich and a cold drink after a morning of golf.
