Measuring just two by three miles, this gated community is primarily a residential subdivision with around 250 residents. They enjoy round-the-clock security and rely on the Gibson Island Corporation to maintain the island’s structures. It has its own post office and a yacht yard.

The topography in this small island is varied– rolling hills, woodland, and low-lying wetlands are just some of its beautiful features, along with seven miles of shoreline There is no denying that Mother Nature is constantly at work in Gibson Island, where locals say the sunsets are unrivaled.

Outdoor recreational opportunities are plentiful in Gibson Island, making it a paradise for those seeking reprieve from the city. Aside from open spaces and forests, Gibson Island is also a bird sanctuary. You can see ospreys swoop down the waters and catch fish with their claws.

The ultra-exclusive Gibson Island Club, known for offering some of the best fine-dining experiences along Chesapeake Bay, is on the island. It also has a wide array of amenities, including its own Yacht Squadron, multiple sports facilities, on-island lodging for members, and the nine-hole golf course designed by Charles Blair Macdonald and Seth Raynor.

Community history

Stuart Symington purchased the island in the early 1920s. His plan was to make it the favored summer destination of wealthy Marylanders. Although Gibson Island’s earliest members were mostly from Baltimore, the club soon welcomed members from New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. It was eventually dubbed the “Newport of the South” – it still enjoys that reputation today.
