Gaithersburg Real Estate

Gaithersburg is a  suburban community located in the heart of Montgomery County, MD. Situated just a short distance from Potomac River and adjacent to Rockville, Gaithersburg is just 17.5 miles from Washington DC.

This economically and ethnically diverse city covers an area of roughly 10.3 square miles. It’s a popular suburb that continues to draw attention for its great quality of life. Modern amenities and a reliable transport system don’t intrude on the community’s small-town vibe – even if it is one of Maryland’s larger cities with a population of 70,000.

Gaithersburg is bisected by Interstate 270, dividing the city into east and west. East Gaithersburg is the older part of the city and the site of the original town and the Olde Towne district. West Gaithersburg is an area known for its walkability and wealthier neighborhoods.

Schools in and around Gaithersburg are managed by Montgomery County Public Schools. As for transport, Gaithersburg is served by the Washington Metro’s Shady Grove Station. The MARC commuter train also connects Gaithersburg to Washington DC via two stations: Old Town Gaithersburg and Metropolitan Grove. Several bus lines operate within the city.

Community history

Gaithersburg traces its origins to the mid-18th century, when it was first known as Log Town, an agricultural community. It was eventually renamed Gaithersburg and incorporated as a town in 1878. The community was named after Benjamin Gaither, who settled in the area during its early days.

From an agricultural town, Gaithersburg grew into a Washington DC suburb, home to The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the global security and aerospace company Lockheed Martin, and IBM. While the companies that operate out of Gaithersburg are some of the biggest in the world, the city has actively worked to preserve its historic communities and heritage. Gaithersburg became a city in 1968.
