Tenley Town and Cathedral Heights

If you’re looking for a home that’s conveniently close to downtown D.C. but refreshingly removed from its constant buzz, the Northwest D.C. area offers excellent options.

Two of the historic neighborhoods here, Tenleytown and Cathedral Heights, showcase the kind of family-friendly tranquility the area offers. While only about 12 minutes apart, these neighborhoods are clearly distinct from each other, offering their own unique flavors and identities.

Tenleytown

Tenleytown is next door to American University, but is far from your typical party-‘til- dawn type of college town. It combines a vibrant commercial center with a peaceful residential area, providing residents with all the urban conveniences they need while remaining delightfully tranquil.

Surrounded by Chevy Chase, Cleveland Park, and Glover Park, Tenleytown has its own Metro stop and is served by Metrobuses that ply the area on several routes.

Cathedral Heights

Cathedral Heights lies serenely in the shadows of the stately National Cathedral, attracting discriminating residents with its idyllic charm and low density. While the neighborhood has no Metro stop, Metrobuses serve the area, plying Wisconsin Avenue on different routes. In addition to Wisconsin Avenue, Cathedral Heights’ borders are Woodley Road, Fulton Street, and Rodman Street.

Everything in Cathedral Heights – shops, restaurants, schools – is within walking distance, adding to its cozy neighborhood charm. The nearby communities of Tenleytown, Glover Park, and Georgetown offer more shopping, dining, and nightlife options for residents.

Real Estate in Tenleytown and Cathedral Heights

Both Tenleytown and Cathedral Heights feature late 1800s to early 1900s Victorian rowhouses, as well as duplexes and single-family homes in various sizes and architectural styles, including Colonial, Tudor, and Cape Cod. Beautifully preserved and upgraded through the decades, these homes offer a timeless charm along with the latest fixtures and appointments.

Both neighborhoods also feature mid to high rise condominiums and apartment complexes, but with marked differences in styles. Many of these properties in Cathedral Heights are older and larger, and sit on sprawling, well-manicured lots with deep setbacks.

Their counterparts in Tenleytown are mostly contemporary mixed-use properties with retail shops on the ground floor, opening directly to the neighborhood’s main thoroughfares.

Lifestyle, nightlife, shopping and dining

  • American University offers great cultural and educational opportunities for Northwest D.C. residents,featuring lectures, concerts, festivals, and other events for the community.
  • The National Cathedral is also a major attraction, not only for its beauty and history but also for the free concerts, lectures, and other events that it stages. The regular ringing of the carillon bells is one of the delights of living in the neighborhood.
  • Historic Fort Reno in Tenleytown was built on the highest natural point in D.C. and is now part of Fort Reno Park.
  • Tenleytown’s urban center is home to large retail chains like Whole Foods and The Container Store, as well as well-loved local shops. Cathedral Heights residents also enjoy the convenience of neighborhood stores and shops but can easily travel to Tenleytown and other neighborhoods in the area like Grover Park and Friendship Heights for more options.
  • Favorite restaurants and nightspots in the Northwest D.C. area include Cathedral Heights’ Cactus Cantina, 2 Amy’s, and District 2 Bar and Grille; and French restaurant Le Chat Noir, Cafe India, Guapo’s Mexican, and Pete’s Apizza in Tenleytown.
